Multiple reactions emerged from the Colombian political scene regarding the recent statements by the Argentine president, Javier Milei, referring to President Gustavo Petro as someone who is “sinking Colombia,” and at Caracol Radio we compiled some voices from the Congress of the Republic that they spoke about it.
The first to do so was the senator of the Democratic Pole, Iván Cepeda, who said that Milei made those statements to hide how badly his government was going: “Of course, what better way to divert attention from what is happening in Argentina than to attack someone who has openly contradicted him in the international public debate.”
On the other hand, the representative for the Democratic Center, Christian Garcés, believes that it all started when Petro criticized Milei’s election in Argentina: “this started when Petro misused the presidency and questioned Javier Milei’s political triumph in Argentina. Now we have an international problem of relations between the two nations in this sense.”
In contrast, the representative of the Historical Pact, Alfredo Mondragón, assured that everything is part of a political marketing strategy of the American candidate, Donald Trump, who invited Milei to the event where he asserted said statements: “it remains as marketing, a high-sounding message and reckless against Petro. Milei is definitely becoming an errand boy for Trump, and will surely be shelved when he is insignificant.”
Another opinion has the representative of the Democratic Center, Juan Espinal, who agrees with Milei in what he said: “I do agree with him. Colombia is not doing well. Social reforms are generating serious uncertainty. Added to the insecurity we are experiencing. 84% of Colombians do not feel safe and security is fundamental.”
Finally, the representative of the Pact, Alirio Uribe, spoke, complaining to President Milei for having ignored the things that Petro has done during his mandate to make the country grow: “I think that between heads of state there would be more respect in how politics is done. In Colombia the indicators are good, foreign investment, lower unemployment, reduced inflation and improved food prices. “I think Milei has no idea what Petro is doing in Colombia.”
