Colombian Pediatrician Margarita Cortés Fights COVID-19 in Remote Regions: Vaccination Efforts and Global Health Impact

Margarita Cortés, a Colombian pediatrician who seeks to stop the spread of COVID-19 in remote regions of the country, spoke with María Camila Díaz at W Fin De Semana about her work.

“Global health is a branch of science that looks at neglected diseases in different countries like malaria, HIV, COVID-19. I had about 9 years of vaccine research and development with different companies,” he said.

“Today we are not only looking at the epidemiology of the disease, but also how it is prevented,” he added.

By the way, he stressed that his concern and the reason why he is doing this work is because he wants people from regions far from the big capitals to be able to access their vaccines against COVID-19, since they did not have the facilities of those who lived in big cities.

COVID-19 has not gone away. If you review the epidemiology in different epidemics such as the Black Death, the measures were the same, the only public health intervention to change the course of the disease was called vaccination, ”he indicated.

In addition, he alerted for the new variants of COVID that resemble influenza.

“The grace is that the entire Colombian population and the world can have the most up-to-date vaccines to have a significant prevention impact,” he said.
