In the last 12 months, the price of Colombian dry parchment coffee skyrocketed 79%. It turns out that the conditions of drought and lack of rain that affect Brazil, the largest coffee producer in the world, have caused global prices to rise.
This variation in prices refers to large-scale international values; the rise affected the consumer on average 17% in the last year. According to figures from the consulting firm Kantar, Colombians consume more coffee, between 2022 and 2024, an increase in consumption was recorded, a couple of years ago per semester they spent 53 thousand pesos*, now 62 thousand pesos*.
Despite the global situation, Colombia exceeded its production last year and expects to close 2024 with more than 13 million 60-kilo bags of coffee. In this regard, Germán Bahamón, general manager of the National Federation of Coffee Growers, said that, “more is produced but it is sold more and more expensive, which is clearly a benefit for local producers.”
Among the actions undertaken by Colombia to support its production is the increase in planted hectares, last year it was 72 thousand and in 2025 100 thousand more hectares will be renewed. They have also invested in fertilization.
