Colombian Camilo Vargas is the most valuable player in the Mexican League

Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas won, for the second consecutive time, the recognition of the most valuable player in Mexican soccer, as well as the conformation of the ideal 11 of the closing tournament of 2022 in Mexico.

Vargas, an exporter from Santa Fe and who has also been called up to the Colombian national team, is considered a “superhero” in Mexican soccer.

“The Colombian superhero Camilo Vargas was chosen by the Editorial Board of the Liga MX (first division of Mexican soccer) as the MVP of the Clausura-2022 tournament″, Liga MX reported.

The Colombian who plays for the Atlas formed one of the defenses that received the fewest goals during the regular phase of the Mexican closing tournament, receiving only 15 goals against playing 23 complete games where, in addition, they achieved the two-time championship.

It is worth remembering that Vargas was also an idol during the 2021 opening tournament by playing the 23 complete games that left his team as champion after 70 years of drought.

Likewise, the ex-Santa Fe was chosen within the Ideal Team of the Clausura 2022 Tournament, which is made up of four Mexicans, three Argentines, two Colombians, one Chilean and one French.

The Mexican ideal 11 is then made up of Camilo Vargas (Atlas) as goalkeeper, Gustavo Cabral (Pachuca) and Hugo Nervo (Atlas) in defense, along with wingers Kevin Álvarez (Pachuca) on the right and Luis Reyes (Atlas) from left, Aldo Rocha (Atlas) and Víctor Guzmán (Pachuca) as midfielders, complemented by two foreign midfielders: the Chilean Diego Valdés (América) and the Colombian Julián Quiñones (Atlas)joining forwards André-Pierre Gignac (Tigers) and Argentine Nicolás Ibáñez (Pachuca).

As for the ideal technical director, Diego Cocca, DT of Vargas and who has led Atlas to be champion twice in a row, was chosen.

Camilo Vargas and Julián Quiñones make history in Mexico: two-time League champions

The Atlas foxes, a team of Colombians Camilo Vargas and Julián Quiñones, were crowned champions of the Mexican soccer Clausura 2022 tournament a few days ago, despite their 2-1 loss to the Tuzos del Pachuca, in a match played at the stadium Gentleman.

Ecuadorian Romario Ibarra, at minute eight, and Argentine Nicolás Ibáñez, at 45+9, scored for Pachuca, a team led by Uruguayan coach Guillermo Almada. For his part, Argentine Julio Furch, at 45, scored for Atlas, led by Argentine coach Diego Cocca.

At minute eight, Romario Ibarra received the ball in the left corridor of the area, leaving Javier Abella and Peruvian Anderson Santamaría seeded and with the panorama clear, he signed the 1-0 against Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas with a definition at the far post.

Pachuca was dramatically saved from a tie at eleven when Argentine defender Gustavo Cabral rejected a shot from fellow Argentine Hugo Nervo inside the area almost on the goal line.

At 44, after reviewing the VAR, referee Fernando Hernández signaled a penalty for a handball by defender Daniel Aceves. Julio Furch was in charge of executing the penalty and scored the 1-1 with a shot to the left of the Argentine goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, who launched himself to the opposite side.

About to go into the break, Nicolás Ibáñez returned the advantage to Pachuca with a 2-1 lead through a header from a pass from Víctor Guzmán.

Already in the second half, Pachuca threatened to score their third goal that would have forced extra time. It was the 51st minute when Colombian Avilés Hurtado hit a shot that went wide of the athlete’s goal.

At minute 83, Atlas was left with ten men due to the expulsion of Aníbal Chalá. In Pachuca’s last clear opportunity, goalkeeper Camilo Vargas saved Atlas again at 84 by lying on his right side to save Ibáñez’s header.

In this way, with a global score of 3-2, the Atlas achieved the third title in its history; he won the previous two in the 1950-51 season and in the 2021 Apertura tournament.

The foxes became the third two-time champion team in the short tournaments after Pumas (Clausura 2004 and Apertura 2004) and León (Apertura 2013 and Clausura 2014). Having won the championships included in the 2021-22 football year, the Atlas foxes also claimed the title of Champion of Champions.
