Fashion Week begins and with it the usual movement of local designers and brands to New York. Cubel, the brand of designer Humberto Cubides, whose stories and designs are inspired by the indigenous cultures of Latin America, will participate for the second time in New York Fashion Week with a catwalk on September 10. On this same date, Colombian designer Paris Rodríguez will break the mold at Rockefeller Center, with businesswomen awakening on the catwalk instead of top models.
Named by Latin Vogue magazine as the new “king of New York Fashion Week”, Raúl Peñaranda, a Colombian designer from the city of Cali, will present his new collection on September 16. Peñaranda is the third Latino who, after Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, has presented 28 uninterrupted collections at NYFW.
Meanwhile, Andrés Otálora, Johanna Ortíz, Silvia Tcherassi and Pink Filosofy join the celebration of fashion in New York, with showrooms and special presentations for their international clients. A new addition to the Colombian fashion elite is Maqui Active, the Colombian premium activewear and athleisure brand that is making its way into the international market with a presence in New York, London and Switzerland and that will present its most recent collection in a specialized showroom in Tribeca.
Colombia is not only making history at Fashion Week, but also at other events such as Magic and Coterie. On the same dates and at both fairs, Colombia will have a delegation of 12 companies seeking to expand their business opportunities and bring their offering closer to the interests of American buyers.
“The future of the Colombian fashion industry is bright. Between January and June 2023, this sector has exported fashion to the United States for 161.4 million. We are eager to become a global fashion powerhouse due to our high-quality textiles and designs, and ethical and sustainable production practices,” concluded Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia.
