Colombian Artist Karol G Criticizes GQ Magazine for Retouching Cover Photo

Here in Norway, there have been strict rules for marking retouching – but it is not like that outside the country’s borders. Most major magazines still retouch without the reader knowing exactly what has been changed.

Among those who take liberties to make their models “prettier” is the fashion magazine GQ. Colombian artist Karol G (32) is not particularly happy about that.

Changed the face

The 32-year-old rages on Instagram, which this month was seen on the cover of the popular magazine.

To two photos: a selfie of herself and a photo of the magazine cover of GQ where she is a model, Karol G, whose real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro, writes the following:

“I don’t even know where to start this message… Today my GQ magazine cover was released, a cover with a picture that does NOT represent me. My face doesn’t look like that, my body doesn’t look like that,” she begins, according to People.

Navarro further writes that she is actually both happy and satisfied with how she looks naturally. She is said to have therefore given feedback on several editions of the cover image, and asked them not to retouch too much.

“Despite making it clear to them repeatedly that I wasn’t happy with several of the editions, they didn’t do anything about it, as if I needed the changes they made to look good,” she continues.

The artist writes that she is aware of the consequences that may now come, but she continues nonetheless:

“Apart from feeling like it’s disrespectful to me, it’s disrespectful to women who wake up and want to feel comfortable with themselves despite society’s stereotypes.”

Repeated criticism

The fashion magazines have several times made sure the hat fits over the years. Especially after the more focus on the natural, several big stars have fought against the controversial editing method.

Among those who have previously reacted is the model Emily Ratajkowski (31). She claimed that Madame Figaro magazine had reduced the size of both her breasts and her lips when she appeared on the cover in 2017.

“I was extremely disappointed and upset to see that my lips and breasts have been photoshopped on this cover. I hope the fashion industry will eventually learn that they need to stop stifling the things that make us unique and instead start celebrating individuality,” she wrote on Instagram.

The fight against a more natural presentation has been going on both against the big magazines, but also on social media.

But at the same time that some take up the fight against precisely this editing of images, several have embraced tools such as Photoshop and FaceTune. Reality queen Kim Kardashian (42) is among the celebrities who have been caught several times red-handed after editing their photos on social media.
