Colombia would seek to host the 2022 Copa América Femenina, but the precedent with the men’s tournament would be its crucifixion

The Colombian women’s team will seek a place towards the 2023 World Cup

Colombia is interested in hosting the Women’s America’s Cup 2022, but the bad precedent left by requesting the postponement of this tournament in the men’s category months ago would imply fewer points in the Conmebol.

The president of the Colombian Football Federation (FCF), Ramón Jesurún, informed that the country is going to apply to host the maximum tournament of selections at the continental level, but also made it clear that achieving the task will be difficult, since the country, basically, is “crucified.”

In an event organized by the FCF to renew the contract with Adidas on September 29, the leader explained:

“There is a call for Conmebol, an opening to the 10 federations to see who is interested. We are going to apply as the other federations will surely do ”.

But his words did not stop there. “What happens is that we have an INRI but we have everything, we have the scenarios, the disposition, the support, the resources.. Let’s try it and we’ll see. In a couple of months I would think that it is defined ”, he added.

In the fight to organize the tournament, which will provide places for the 2023 Women’s Soccer World Cup, one of the candidates is Brazil, organizer of this year’s men’s championship, in which, led by Lionel Messi, Argentina was crowned champion .

“I think that the majority of federations will present themselves, except for Chile, which was the last one, everyone would be interested in doing it. Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, today the women’s tournament is very attractive “Jesurún commented.

The advantage of Colombia is that some of the stadiums, such as El Campín and Pascual Guerrero, underwent renovations to receive the Copa América 2021, but they are not the only ones that are in a position to provide a pleasant experience in a sporting event of such a size.

“We have the four most important cities, I would add to the coffee region, Bucaramanga. We have cities with good stadiums to have a good event ”.

The president of the FCF also stated that if they had held the Copa América for men, Colombia would have met expectations. “We are a very good host country, we have no fear of anything. If we had organized in July of this year we would have shone ”.

On May 20, Conmebol responded to the request of the Government of Colombia to postpone the Copa América to November, citing health reasons, although it is believed that it was also due to the national strike that was taking place in the country at that time.

Through a press release, Conmebol reported that, “For reasons related to the international calendar of competitions and the logistics of the tournament, it is impossible to transfer the Copa América 2021 to the month of November”, as the then Minister of Sports Ernesto Lucena had put it, after a meeting with President Iván Duque, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Health, the Vice Chancellor and the Regional Minister.

In the document, Conmebol added that, “it appreciates the enthusiasm and commitment of the President of the Republic of Colombia, Mr. Iván Duque and his collaborators, as well as by the president of the Colombian Soccer Federation, Ramón Jesurún, and his team. It is certain that in the future new projects will emerge together for the growth of Colombian and South American football ”.

It is worth remembering that days after the tournament bus Argentina, the other organizer, also got off, so Brazil finally welcomed him.
