BOGOTÁ (AP) – Colombia will host the 2022 Copa América for women, CONMEBOL announced Wednesday.
The first three teams of the tournament, between July 8 and 30, will qualify directly to the 2023 World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand.
Those who finish fourth and fifth in the Copa América will play a playoff game against eight teams from the other FIFA-affiliated confederations.
It will be the ninth edition of the continental competition that began to be staged in 1991. In 2020, CONMEBOL announced that the women’s Copa América will be held every two years instead of four from 2022.
Colombia ran for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, but was overtaken by the joint candidacy of Australia and New Zealand in the vote.
It also lost the men’s Copa América venue when the government and local soccer federation called for the postponement until the end of this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament finally took place in Brazil.
“For the executive committee (of the Colombian Federation) it is an immense pride to receive that vote of confidence from CONMEBOL and we will make all our efforts with the national government to organize this championship with the highest international standards,” said the president of the entity, Ramón Jesurún.
Colombia has enough stadiums to host international tournaments. He hosted the U20 World Cup in 2011.
