Colombia to Introduce 5G Technology: A Game-Changer for Connectivity and Development

“5G technology is coming to Colombia. It is a state-of-the-art cellular technology (the most recent is 4G)”. This was announced yesterday in Cartagena by the Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Mauricio Lizcano. To contract this new technology, the national government scheduled a multiband auction for December 20, with remnants of other bands, and for the arrival of 5G.

Higher data speeds, both downloading and uploading, offer higher quality and, above all, have enormous applications for the industry. Speed ​​in ports, in commerce, manufacturing, facilitates the use of robotics, because it is faster and more precise. It will greatly help the digital transformation of Colombia, so that Colombians have better data quality, higher speed in the videos, in their content when uploading and downloading them,” explained the minister.

For the arrival of this 5G technology, a national and international public tender will be opened that will end with the award of the auction on December 20. The winner will be the one who pays the most for that auction.

Lizcano also presented the structuring team, led by three renowned international experts and supported by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

“It is news that Colombia had been waiting for years and that the Government of change makes possible. With 5G we will not only bring better connectivity and greater coverage, but we will promote services and technologies that will allow us to support other important processes in economic, health, and clean energy issues. We are going to strengthen the telecommunications industry and, therefore, we will get more people to connect and be able to take advantage of the Internet, as is our purpose”, said the ICT minister. August 1st: publication of draft resolution with conditions.

September 1st: publication of the reserve price.

October the 17th: publication of the final version of the resolution.

November 10: deadline for receipt of applications from interested parties.

December 8: corrections and delivery of guarantees.
