The Colombian Prosecutor’s Office has reported that it has launched several investigations into the alleged case of illegal financing of Gustavo Petro’s presidential campaign for the elections in which he was elected head of state, and has detailed that those investigated include the country’s vice president, Francia Márquez.
According to the Colombian press, the Prosecutor’s Office has initiated up to six investigation processes in which possible acts of corruption are investigated, as well as the alleged responsibility not only of Vice President Márquez, but also of Guillermo Jaramillo, Petro’s former campaign manager. and now Minister of Health.
“The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating alleged irregular events in the electoral financing with prohibited sources of the presidential candidacy of Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego and the vice-presidential candidacy of France Elena Márquez Mina,” reads a document from the Public Ministry and collected by RCN Radio.
On the other hand, the authorities are investigating whether Jaramillo, as Petro’s campaign manager, could have allowed the irregular transfer of candidates from the Historical Pact – the coalition that promoted Petro’s candidacy – in small planes from the Sociedad company.
The Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating the alleged donation of some 500 million Colombian pesos (just over 120,300 euros) made by the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (FECODE) to Petro’s presidential campaign. These facts could constitute the crime of financing electoral campaigns with prohibited sources.Copy to clipboard
