The development bank of Latin America (CAF) will elect its new executive president for the next five years this Monday, a position for which the current undersecretary of International Financial Relations of Argentina, Christian Gonzalo Asinelli, and the Colombian Sergio Díaz-Granados are opting. , current Executive Director for Colombia for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Andean country.
The election of the new president comes after the previous highest representative of the institution, the Peruvian Luis Carranza, resigned a year before the end of his term. After Carranza’s departure, the institution appointed Renny López as interim president of the body until the election of a new president.
Thus, CAF will elect the new executive president in accordance with the provisions of the constitutive agreement, in a process that raises a series of requirements and procedures to guarantee the validity of the candidates and the transparency of the election, which will continue with a meeting in which will conduct a formal interview with the candidates.
Finally, the election of the new president will take place at a meeting of the bank’s board of directors, scheduled for this July 5. The executive president will serve for five years, and may be re-elected only once for an additional period.
THE ELECTION WILL BE DEBATED BETWEEN AN ARGENTINE AND A COLOMBIAN
As for the profiles of the candidates, Asinelli is a political scientist from Buenos Aires who throughout his career has served as corporate director of Institutional Development of CAF, as legislator of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, national director of the State Modernization Project and undersecretary of Evaluation of Projects with External Financing of the Headquarters of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nation, among other positions.
Likewise, in 2019 he was the president of the Fundación Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires. In December 2019, he was appointed Undersecretary of International Financial Relations for Development of the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Argentine Nation.
During his career he has published several books and articles, among which are ‘Buenos Aires: The city we have, the city we want’ (2009) and ‘Modernization of the Argentine State: scenarios and professional practice (2015)’.
For its part, Colombia has proposed the former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the country Sergio Díaz-Granados for the presidency of the institution until 2026.
Díaz-Granados has served as executive director for Colombia at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for more than six years, as well as a member of boards of directors, including CAF.
The former minister began his political career at the age of 26, in 1995, and two years later he was elected deputy of the Magdalena Assembly. In 2000 he teamed up with the former president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, who at that time was in charge of the Ministry of Finance. At this stage, Díaz-Granados served as advisor to the Office on Territorial Tax Matters.
In 2010 he was appointed as Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism under the legislature of Juan Manuel Santos.
Among other positions, the Colombian was elected as a representative to the Chamber by Magadalena, president of the Economic Affairs Commission, vice minister of Business Development and president of the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies.
