During the IV Ministerial Meeting, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo described the actions and measures his country is taking on this issue to the delegates of the body made up of 22 countries in the Americas.
Among these, he mentioned the tripartite mechanism currently in place with the United States and Panama to respond to the challenges of the Darien region and the establishment of Safe Mobility Offices in border areas.
According to the report, Mexico is also working together to address the new challenge of migrants who are in transit through the country.
Also during this session, Murillo chaired a meeting on the International Drug Control System.
Senior representatives from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Spain, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Uruguay participated in the event.
The meeting aimed to advance the consolidation of a group of like-minded countries that would allow them to share their challenges, perspectives and aspirations regarding the international drug control system, as well as to identify future joint actions on the issue.
As part of the agenda developed by the Colombian delegation in the context of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the foreign minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding that makes effective the donation of a highly complex hospital in La Guajira, in the north of the country, by the United Arab Emirates.
The agreement, signed by Minister Reem Bint Ebrahim Al Hashemy, constitutes an unprecedented event in the efforts made as part of international cooperation, led by President Gustavo Petro, according to Murillo.
