The Colombian Government announced this Thursday 15 measures to strengthen the country’s energy system with the aim of prevent the drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon from leading the country to rationing.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho, explained in a press conference: “Although we do not have an imminent risk of rationing, the increase in these (climatic) conditions forces us to take structural reinforcement measures so that we do not reach any critical condition”.
The effects of the El Niño phenomenon in Colombia, manifested in lack of precipitation and high temperatureshas brought the reservoirs to a critical situation and forced the Bogotá authorities to impose water rationing measures in the capital.
Authorities are also concerned because Much of the country’s energy is produced by hydroelectric plants.for which the Government will strengthen the energy system, especially the operation of thermal plants, to avoid rationing.
“Together, the Ministry of Mines and Energy with the Superintendency of Public Services will carry out the inspection, monitoring and permanent surveillance of all agents of the national energy system,” explained the head of that portfolio when talking about one of the measures.
Blackouts
Camacho also announced that they made a decision aimed at “facilitate the availability of natural gas for the demand for electrical energy in the country”since the objective is to use this resource for the operation of thermal plants.
“Additional regulatory measures will also be adopted to improve energy efficiency.”
“It is not about putting more energy into the system, but about making some savings and using (efficient) energy that allows us to get through this moment”added the senior official.
Due to the situation that Colombia is experiencing, The Government decided to suspend the energy supply to Ecuador this week and the president Gustavo Petro he regretted this Tuesday that the neighboring country has had temporary blackouts since Sunday due to electricity rationing. EFE
