Colombia Makes History with 2-1 Victory Over Brazil in World Cup Qualifiers

Colombia beat Brazil 2-1 this Thursday (16), at the Metropolitano stadium in Barranquilla, Colombia. The victory was historic for the Colombians: for the first time, as hosts, Colombia beat Brazil in the World Cup qualifiers.

Until then they had played 14 games with 7 Brazilian wins and 7 draws. The last game, before tonight’s clash, had ended in a goalless draw, in 2021.

The last Brazilian victory occurred in 2003. On September 7th, Brazil won 2-1 against the home team with goals from Ronaldo and Kaká.

Brazil has not lost two games in qualifying since qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when they had two defeats in 18 games. Now it’s two in five games. Colombia had never beaten Brazil in the Qualifiers, and had not won the match since 2015.

For the sixth round of the Qualifiers, Brazil will have the classic against Argentina on Tuesday (21). The game will be at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), at the Maracanã stadium, in Rio. Colombia visits Paraguay, also on Tuesday, at 8 pm (Brasília time).
