“We want to talk to Russia’s diplomatic mission in Colombia to find out more about the military support being given to Venezuela,” President Ivan Duke said on Friday.
He criticized the Caracas government for sheltering groups that had seceded from Colombian guerrilla organizations. “It is therefore important to understand the scope and objectives of Russia’s military presence in the country,” Dukes quoted El Tiempo as saying.
Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano spoke on Thursday about troop movements in Venezuela with “assistance and technical support from Russia and Iran.”
The Russian embassy in Bogotá has denied the allegations.
“We are outraged by the ongoing efforts to accuse the Russian Federation of interfering in Colombia’s internal affairs,” the embassy said in a statement on Friday.
As the United States and Russia continue to disagree over security guarantees in Europe, Moscow has recently allowed troops to be deployed in Cuba and Venezuela.
Russia and Venezuela have signed a number of cooperation agreements, and in recent years Russian soldiers have occasionally been in Venezuela for training purposes and joint maneuvers.
