The Consul General of Colombia, Andrés Mejía Pizano, received the support of the 15 consular representatives of the Latin American countries accredited in New York, to occupy the ProTempore Presidency of the Coalition of Latin American Consuls (CLACNY), for the period 2024.

The nomination and subsequent election took place at the recent ordinary meeting of CLACNY, where Consul Mejía was unanimously elected to preside over this consular integration mechanism.

The Colombian diplomat explained that, during the year of his mandate in this mechanism, he will prioritize his work in four areas that are key for the Latin American migrant community living in New York.

“We will deepen, from the Coalition of Consuls, the relationship with local authorities, the private sector and organizations, on issues such as mental health, preparation for employment, immigration issues and dignified treatment for all migrants,” Consul Mejía assured the time that I do not hesitate to emphasize that it will bring the voice of Latin American migrants to all levels of the city and state of New York so that “their rights are not violated.”

The first act that Consul Mejía is going to carry out as President of CLACNY, is to invite the Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, to a meeting to be held in the first weeks of January with the consuls of the 16 countries that make up the Coalition, to that the highest authority of New York present the city’s plans regarding the immigration crisis that the Big Apple is experiencing and, additionally, explore initiatives to promote essential issues in Latin American communities such as employment, health, with emphasis on health mental; decent treatment and immigration issues.

Consul Mejía receives the presidency of CLACNY from his Uruguayan colleague Gabriela Ortigosa, whom all the consuls thanked for her excellent management at the head of the Coalition.

What is CLACNY?

It is a Coalition of Latin American Consuls in New York (CLACNY) made up of 16 countries with consular accreditation in this city. This mechanism works to defend human rights and improve the living conditions of the migrant community from Central and South America that lives in the world capital.
