Colombia Announces Release of Liverpool Striker Luis Diaz’s Kidnapped Father

On Thursday, Colombia announced the release of the father of Liverpool striker Luis Diaz, 12 days after he was kidnapped in the north of the country by members of the rebel National Liberation Army militia.

His release was announced by the government delegation, which is currently conducting peace negotiations with the National Liberation Army.

The kidnapping of Luis Manuel Diaz on October 28 in the small town of Barrancas quickly attracted international attention.

On Sunday, November 5, Diaz Jr. demanded his father’s release, after scoring a goal for his team Liverpool in a Premier League match, and revealed a shirt with the words “Freedom for my father” written in Spanish.

It was not initially clear who carried out the kidnapping, but the Colombian government announced last week that it had information that a unit of the National Liberation Army had kidnapped Diaz Sr.

The militia later admitted the kidnapping, saying it was a mistake and that its senior leadership had ordered his release.

The militia said in a statement on Sunday that the planned release was hampered by the military deployment in northern Colombia, and that it could not guarantee a release under these circumstances.

The Colombian army said on Monday that it had begun changing its positions to facilitate the release.
