How should the women of 1. FC Köln turn things around? After a number of games without a goal, points were at stake at Werder Bremen on Friday evening in the Bundesliga.
The women of 1. FC Köln had to go to Werder Bremen after the separation from head coach Sascha Glass on Friday evening (March 24, 2023). The next setback came under interim coach Nicole Bender-Rummler.
At first it looked like a point would be shared for a long time, but then a free kick for Bremen in the 85th minute. The ball came from Nina Lührßen’s half field on goal. Actually an easy ball for Manon Klett in the Cologne goal, but it slipped through her fingers. Bremen 1, Cologne 0.
1. FC Köln: Manon Klett inconsolable after a mistake
The FC women tried to comfort Klett, but she is inconsolable at first after the momentous mistake. Cologne remains penultimate with 12 points after 16 games. While the Bremen women celebrated in front of the fans, the Cologne women put their heads together.
Cologne’s Manjou Wilde said at MagentaSport after the defeat: “Manon Klett kept us in the game in many games, we wanted to signal that when we all went to her. We have to build them now. I’m sorry for you. We have to stick together. It was a tough week.” Regarding the change of coach, she said: “Nicole Bender-Rummler motivated us. But the situation is not ideal when the coach leaves in the middle of the season.”
Glass was only released on Thursday with immediate effect after months of a dry spell. Under Glass, the team had recently slipped to the penultimate place in the table and was in acute danger of relegation.
There were ten games in a row without a win, but the weak 0-0 draw at bottom of the table in Potsdam on Wednesday was the last straw. “We wanted to stay up in the league again this season together with Sascha. We have made enormous progress with him over the past three years and last season we stayed in the Bundesliga for the first time. Unfortunately, after the ongoing negative series, a change was unavoidable in order to maintain the chances of staying up in the league,” said Division Manager Nicole Bender-Rummler.

On an interim basis, Bender-Rummler was on the sidelines in Bremen on Friday. Before the duel, she said: “The quality for staying in the league is definitely there in our team. Now it will be important for the girls to believe in themselves and their strengths again so that they can bring their potential back onto the pitch in the next few games.”
In the days after the game in Bremen, the club wants to discuss a new head coach for the FC women. (ubo)
