Cologne: Rescue workers cancel the search for a second person

First there were reports of a capsized canoe from which the two women had fallen. However, the fire brigade revised this statement. The police investigating the case are currently assuming that it is a swimming accident: “As things stand, the two women were in the water to cool off,” said a police spokesman. Then she is said to have caught the Rhine current so that they could not save themselves on land on their own.

Helicopters and several boats in action

The emergency services traveled by helicopter, several boats and divers to find the second missing person. Echosounders were also used to locate the missing woman underwater.

At 8.30 p.m., the rescue workers had to abort the search without success. “Because of the current, also in the Rhine channel, the area has become too big to search for this evening,” said a fire department spokesman. It is still unclear whether the search will continue on Sunday, as well as further details about the people. (red)
