Cologne Opera Director: “Be creative with fewer resources”

Cologne/Berlin (MH) – The future director of the Cologne Opera, Hein Mulders, sees the music theater under financial pressure. With his budget, he quickly reached his limits, said the Dutchman in an interview with the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Saturday). But there’s no point “banging on about it – and I don’t do that either”.

The decisive factor is that the balance succeeds in being creative “with fewer resources than you actually need”. If you then distribute these funds evenly, “everything kind of becomes gray”. That’s why it’s right to “grab here and there and save elsewhere,” Mulders explained, adding: “Opera is an expensive art form.”

The previous director of Essen’s Aalto Music Theater will take over the Cologne Opera on September 1st. Mulders succeeds Birgit Meyer, who has headed the house since 2012. For the 2024/25 season, he is to lead the opera division of the Cologne theater back from the interim in the Staatshaus to the renovated headquarters on Offenbachplatz.
