Study as part of the MoNoPoL-Sleep project receives the renowned Theo and Friedl Schöller Prize for geriatric medicine / publication in “International Psychogeriatrics”
The award ceremony took place on October 18, 2024 in Nuremberg. The excellent study led by Cologne was published in January 2024 in the journal International Psychogeriatrics under the title “Intervention for sleep problems in nursing home residents with dementia: a cluster-randomized study”.
Promote sleep without medication
The study took place as part of the MoNoPol-Sleep project (non-pharmacological sleep promotion for people with dementia in long-term inpatient care), which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 2018 to 2022. MoNoPol-Sleep is a collaboration of researchers from the University of Cologne, the University of Lübeck, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases.
The effectiveness of the developed concept was proven in a randomized controlled study: 24 participating care facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony-Anhalt were randomly assigned to two different groups. A targeted intervention program was used in one group. It includes an analysis of the sleep environment in each facility, the introduction of so-called sleep representatives as well as training and information material. In workshops, the nurses were able to discuss cases and develop a concept for promoting sleep that was suitable for their facilities. The comparison group received no interventions. A total of 191 people with dementia took part in the study.
“The two prize-winning works this year are of outstanding scientific quality and originality,” says Professor Dr. Thomas Hillemacher, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Schöller Prize and Head of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Nuremberg Clinic. Out of 14 applications, the two award-winning studies also scored highly because of their high social relevance and the ease with which their approaches can be implemented in everyday life.
The Institute for Nursing Science at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne under the direction of Professor Dr. Sascha Köpke and Dr. Martin Töpfer was founded in 2020 and is one of the first university institutions of its kind. The institute is committed to the further development of nursing practice in research and teaching. The focus of research at the Institute of Nursing Science is so-called clinical nursing research. The MoNoPol-Sleep study is an example of this research, which is always about improving nursing care for people in need of care.
