Cologne Kalk: Police shoot Nala the dog in the hallway

Cologne –

The pictures are shocking. A dog lies in its blood, gasps for air. His master lies hunched over the animal, desperately hugging it. In the background police officers are standing on the stairs. It is the tragic end of an operation in Kalk because of domestic violence in which the dog Nala (2) was shot.

  • Police in action in Cologne-Kalk
  • Official shot and killed Nala, a mixed breed dog
  • The statements between the police and the dog owner about the case contradict each other

It is 1:13 a.m. on Friday (May 14th) when several calls to the police reported a fight in front of a house on Formesstraße in Kalk, in which men and women attacked each other. The officers rush to meet several people. The police want to get an overview of the unclear situation.

The tumult also woke house resident Marcel B. (32) from his sleep. He looks out the window on the second floor. “I just wanted to see what was going on and then closed the window again.” What he does not suspect: The officers have recognized a laceration on his head – and suspect that he may have been involved in front of the door.

They storm upstairs, ring the doorbell and knock on the front door. Bitch Nala doesn’t like that. She starts barking. The officers are forewarned and shout: “Secure the dog and open the door.”

Marcel B. was the owner of the shot bitch Nala. He became involved in the police operation but was innocent.

Marcel B .: “I didn’t even know what they wanted. I quickly put on a pair of pants and then went to the door. Before I opened it, I grabbed Nala’s collar so that she wouldn’t jump into the hallway. “

Statements by the Cologne police and dog owners contradict each other

But that’s exactly what happened, according to the police. “The dog is approaching the officers and wanted to jump on a colleague. There was no more time for a warning shot. The officer therefore shot the dog twice, ”explains police spokesman Carsten Rust.

An existing video, however, speaks more for Marcel B’s version, because the dog is in his blood in the door frame. A projectile goes through the dog and hits a tile right next to the door frame. In an attempted attack, Nala should have been lying in the hallway.

Marcel B. bends over his injured dog.

Marcel B. is desperate, his dog is bleeding profusely, but is still conscious at this moment.

Marcel B. now wants to file a complaint and clarify the matter. “I was not involved in domestic violence. I got the laceration when I fell with an e-scooter. ” The police confirmed that the 32-year-old was exonerated. The real suspect was identified and reported.

Cologne bitch Nala does not survive the shots

It would also have to be clarified why the officers did not use a pepper spray that was specially developed for animal defense. Because a bullet from a weapon can be the greatest danger for the officers themselves if it penetrates the dog as it happened and hits the wall.

Police spokesman Christoph Gilles says: “The firearm is the safest way to stop a dog’s attack immediately. Pepper spray does not always work immediately and reliably. “

The fire brigade’s animal transport truck arrived for Nala to take her to a veterinary clinic. But she didn’t make it there and died from her gunshot wounds.
