The online magazine “Lust” has one Study the most sexually open cities in Germany released. Cologne ranked first in the “Sexpositive City Index Germany”, followed by the Baden cities of Mannheim and Freiburg. The federal capital Berlin finished in eighth place, behind Osnabrück, Magdeburg, Chemnitz and Wiesbaden. The other megacities results: Munich reached 11th place, Hamburg had to settle for 22nd place. Overall, the magazine looked at the 50 largest cities in Germany.
For these cities it was determined which parameters are particularly pronounced with respect to a sexually positive life and measured by the number of inhabitants. The criteria included the number of local sex shops, swinger clubs, brothels and prostitutes, as well as the number of gay clubs, sex counseling centers and health centers. “The inclusion of the LGBTQIA + community is considered a particularly important indicator, as equality is an essential factor in positive sex life,” Lust said.
Cologne has around 19 sex shops, nine gay pride events and 25 LGBTQIA + bars. Although the cathedral city is behind Berlin in absolute numbers in most categories (32 sex shops, six gay pride events and 46 LGBTQIA + bars), the federal capital has more than three times as many inhabitants.
Smaller cities are doing well
“Especially smaller cities can convince in the positive sex rankings and get very good rankings,” explained “Lust”. “In terms of population, cities like Mannheim, Freiburg and Osnabrück can compete with big cities.” The data showed: “The positive sex movement has finally arrived in Germany.”
Although a city in North Rhine-Westphalia tops the list, the most populous federal state also occupies the bottom five (!) Places. Hamm, Duisburg, Leverkusen, Solingen and Mülheim an der Ruhr are the least sex-positive. However, that doesn’t mean there’s no positive sex life at all: “Quite the contrary: While Mülheim an der Ruhr and Leverkusen are particularly popular with prostitutes, Solingen can score with her local swingers club,” says “Lust”. “And that also makes it clear: in almost every German city there seems to be a frivolous and sex-positive life.”
Last year, “Lust” identified the sexiest cities in the world. The German metropolises of Cologne and Berlin clinched silver and bronze just behind New York City (according to queer.de). (A.D)
