Colmex will present the José S. Helú Chair of Arabic Language and Culture

The College of Mexico (COLMEX), through the Center for Asian and African Studies (CEAA COLMEX), in collaboration with the Alfredo Harp Helú Oaxaca Foundation, AC, will celebrate the creation of the José S. Helú Chair of Arabic Language and Culture this Friday the 15th, at 4 p.m., in the Alfonso Reyes Room.

The purpose of the chair is to consolidate an institutional space for study, academic exchange and analysis around the study of Arabic language and culture. It also seeks to be a reference for constructive dialogue between cultures through dissemination activities, translations, publications and academic stays of specialists.

It is named after the poet José S. Helú (1870-1935), a Lebanese immigrant to our country and founder of the Arab-Mexican newspaper Al Jawater (The ideas). Through his poems and his journalistic work, Helú kept the Arab language, literature and culture alive in Mexican lands.

Silvia Giorguli, president of COLMEX, will participate in the opening ceremony; José Antonio Cervera, director of CEAA COLMEX; Alfredo Harp Helú and María Isabel Grañén Porrúa, presidents of the Alfredo Harp Helú Oaxaca Foundation, AC, and Shadi Rohana, coordinator of the Chair and professor of Arabic language and literature at the CEAA.

The academic-cultural program will consist of the keynote lecture José S. Helú: poet, journalist and leader of the Lebanese community in Mexico, given by María Isabel Grañén Porrúa; a poetry reading in Arabic and Spanish, by CEAA Arabic language students, under the direction of professors Shadi Rohana and Khlid Chami; and a dance piece titled Rojuby the Marfil Danza Espacio school in Oaxaca and inspired by a poem by Francisco Segovia.

CEAA COLMEX, since its foundation in 1964, has been a pioneering center in the Ibero-American world for teaching and research in the area of ​​the Middle East and the Arabic language. Through its study programs, it has trained generations of researchers and teachers in the various disciplines of social studies and humanities that today play a fundamental role in the construction of a thorough knowledge of the Middle East in Mexico, contributing to intercultural dialogue between Arab and Ibero-American worlds in various fields such as museography, culture, art, literary translation, academic research, university and school teaching, commerce and politics.
