Collision with a wild animal? Repairing damage is becoming more and more expensive

This is evident from figures from the Dutch Association of Insurers. There were 8,603 collisions with wild animals last year. That is considerably more than in 2014, when 5750 wild animals were hit.

Coronadrukte

According to insurers, the number of collisions with wild animals is increasing because the roads are increasingly busy. Telephone use in the car also plays an important role.

Most collisions took place in April and May last year, when the Netherlands was in lockdown due to the corona crisis. According to the covenant, this may be due to the many walkers in nature, which caused wild animals to leave their permanent area more often.

Most collisions with wild animals occur in the province of Gelderland (1300). Often these are deer or boar. According to the insurers, the price of repairs has increased because cars have become increasingly complex and parts have become more and more expensive.

Investing in road safety

The insurers require the government to invest heavily in road safety. Not only must distraction in traffic be tackled, the alliance also wants local authorities to point out places where many wildlife collisions occur.
