240 students from the 3rd year of Feuchères participated in the Elles de la Science at the Museum.
It swarms with teenagers from all over the corridors and rooms of the Museum of Natural History of Nîmes. Since Thursday and until last night, the third from Feuchères college had the chance to participate in a large-scale operation: the Elles de la science.
“An event created to highlight women scientists”, explains Philippe Garcia, animator of the Museum. “The idea is not at all to fall into any feminism and to talk about science. But it is clear that received ideas are tough and that, for many, science remains a universe reserved for men . By meeting women scientists, it is an opportunity for adolescents to change their outlook and perhaps for young girls who wish to choose this career if that is their desire. “
And on this Friday morning, between two skeletons, it is the girls who seem the most passionate about this school trip. “It’s really interesting and then it changes our course!”Shanyce smiles.
Sitting in front of her Sacha, nods: “I think you really learn more from being here than being in class!” Ludovic confirms, “yes it’s really interesting this outing.”
The teenagers are seated around a board game with which they must build a city that consumes as little energy as possible. A theme that particularly interests them. “The climate, the ecology and everything that we do to the planet interest us”Alicia continues. “We cannot remain indifferent!” Moreover, out of the four friends, the two girls hope to succeed in scientific careers. If Shaynice would like to integrate a training course in health careers, Alicia wants to become “robotic engineer.”
Sciences dures
A career choice not so common among girls according to Philippe Garcia. “Mentalities on stereotypes are changing, but we are seeing very slow developments! While at the baccalaureate girls have better grades than boys in science subjects, very few of them consider continuing their studies in this direction. In the hard sciences today they are still very few in number. Even almost absent in the fields of mathematics, physics and even engineering. “
Nora goes out with her friend Maëlle from a workshop led by a scientist who works on bacteria. A revelation. “When she talks about her job it’s so exciting. Really more than when we are in class. Thanks to what she does every day, she helps save lives by looking for something to fight bacteria. It’s a shame. that we didn’t meet people like her more often, that would have made me want to work better in science! “
Also for the general public this weekend
The Elles de la science have been organized at the Natural History Museum since 2019. And each year it will be college students from different establishments who can participate. But given the success of the meeting, the organizers have decided to offer the general public the opportunity to come and discover these talented women on Saturday and Sunday. Escape Game, conferences, meetings, board games… the program is aimed at the whole family. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 13 Boulevard Amiral-Courbet, Nîmes.
