The Université de Montréal Carabins created a congestion at the top of the standings of the Quebec university football conference, Saturday night in Quebec City, in favor of an 18-17 victory over the Laval University Rouge et Or .

As has become a tradition between the two teams, the game remained undecided until the very end. It was an 8-point push in the last quarter, punctuated by a rigged kick, which allowed the visitors to snatch the victory. After a safety touchdown, kicker Michael Arpin posted field goals of 28 and 15 yards, the latter with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
The Rouge et Or picked up the ball and advanced to the Carabins’ 37-line, but had to settle for a single after a failed field goal.
Beaten last week by the astonishing Concordia Stingers, the Carabins have therefore bounced back nicely. Victim of two interceptions towards the end of this game, quarterback Jonathan Sénécal was more solid for his first game at PEPS. He had 26 passes in 40 attempts for gains of 286 yards and a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, the Carabins managed to push the ball well and, once again, it was rookie Hassane Dosso who was Sénécal’s favorite target with no less than 13 receptions for gains of 147 yards – a third game in a row with at least 100 yards of aerial gain.
“It’s the kind of performance we needed to cheer us up after last week’s loss,” said the French-born player. This is my first time working with a shift like Jonathan and I have adapted quickly.
“I was very stressed for this first game in Quebec and I’m happy to have been able to play that way. I set the bar high and I want to continue to perform at this level. ”
Only negative point, Dosso received a costly penalty after an unsportsmanlike gesture. “Soaped” by head coach Marco Iadeluca, he admitted: “It was a mistake on my part and I learned the lesson. It will not happen again… ”
Iadeluca also praised the way his players reacted after the loss to Concordia.
A “lethargy” of two defeats
The two teams finished the first half tied, 10-10. After a placement from Vincent Blanchard (34 yards), the Rouge et Or, Jonathan Sénécal managed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carl Chabot to allow the Carabins to take the lead.
Thomas Bolduc, on a one-yard run, gave the hosts the lead again, before Arpin equalized the two teams with a 25-yard placement.

Blanchard then added two field goals (28 and 13 yards) in the third quarter to put Laval ahead 16-10, but the Carabins had not said their last word …
With a 2-1 record, the Carabins are therefore tied with the Stingers, who however have the advantage in first place by virtue of their victory last Friday. The Rouge et Or also have two wins, but have suffered two losses in their last two games. A “lethargy” that the team of head coach Glen Constantin is not used to since it is necessary to go back to 1999 to find the last losing streak of the Rouge et Or.
Next Saturday, the Carabins will host the McGill Redbirds (1-2) at CEPSUM, while the Stingers will host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or at Concordia Stadium.
The Rouge et Or will have a weekend of break and, no doubt, of reflection. Quarterback Thomas Bolduc didn’t have a bad game (nearly 250 passing yards), but like last week in Sherbrooke, he was unable to complete the offensive pushes in the fourth quarter. Rookie quarterback Arnaud Desjardins, MVP in 2019 College Football Division 1 at Cégep du Vieux Montréal, could have a chance to play.
