University hospital staff will receive a 10% salary increase next year. Salaries will increase by 6% on January 1 and again by 4% in November.
The health unions have reached an agreement on the matter with the Dutch Federation of Academic Medical Centers (NFU). The salary increase applies to all of the more than 80,000 employees of the seven UMCs.
The unions considered going to court last month because, according to them, the NFU refused to abide by collective agreements on wage increases. It was agreed that wages will rise in line with inflation, which is now unprecedented.
Increased purchasing power
Unions were aiming for 11.3 percent next year; so now 10 percent has been agreed. “This means that we expect employers to do everything possible to compensate for inflation in the next collective agreements,” says FNV director Elise Merlijn.
The NFU points out that the agreement reached can keep the purchasing power of employees up to standard. “In the interests of our employees, we have explored the extreme limits of what is still financially responsible,” says NFU negotiator Gabriel Zwart. According to him, the deal has “a very big impact” on UMC’s financial situation.
