The collection of signatures on the preservation of the Maternity Ward in hospitals in Kuldiga and Dobele has started on the portal of public initiatives “Manabalss.lv”.
Sandis Miļauskis has been indicated as the representative of the initiative. In his opinion, from January 2021, the Maternity Wards in Kuldiga and Dobele hospitals should not be abolished. The initiative explains that the nearest maternity ward from Saldus is already more than 50 kilometers away, but after 2021, as planned by the Ministry of Health, it will be more than 90 kilometers. Also, in case of bleeding of pregnant women, it would be possible to deliver them to the hospital where the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is located sooner.
“For Latvia’s 100 smart heads to think about the well-being of the population, the demographic situation will rise and there will be more births in small hospitals – Kuldīga and Dobele,” Miļauskis pointed out, emphasizing that less money should be spent “everywhere else” .
The preservation of the mentioned wards of the hospitals, in his opinion, would allow the new mothers to get to the hospital faster, would promote the demographic situation in Latvia.
As reported, work is currently underway to review hospital levels and assess the extent to which Latvian hospitals provide the services they have undertaken and whether the provision of any services in them should be optimized.
