Chinese aerospace giant Comac continues to develop a new wide-body passenger aircraft on its own: a joint venture with Russia to produce the aircraft has collapsed and ceased to exist. Speaking at an aviation conference in Beijing, Comac’s vice president said development of the C929 wide-body passenger aircraft has advanced.
Moreover, the Chinese leader did not say a word about Russia. At the same time, journalists report that the Russian side is no longer a partner of Comac. Russia and China created a joint venture back in 2017, then their goal was the design and production of the CR929 passenger airliner.
However, sanctions against Russia have dealt a serious blow to Russian aircraft manufacturers, and as a result the project has begun to face delays.
Russian economic analyst and blogger Anatoly Nesmiyan notesthat the Chinese withdrew from the joint project a long time ago.
“This is a continuation of Russia’s locking into a state of technological backwardness. The degradation of the Russian aircraft industry has already reached the point where only two (!) passenger aircraft are being delivered this year. Perhaps by the end of the year their total number will increase to five, but it is unlikely to even reach a double digit number. Against this background, false ideas about repurposing supersonic bombers into supersonic passenger airliners are becoming completely prohibitive. Russia has stopped achieving what it was capable of more than half a century ago. She doesn’t even meet her own standards, let alone those of others, and even in the conditions of the country’s closure.
There is only one conclusion: every day of this regime’s rule brings three to four to five days of additional lag. We are even at least a generation behind ourselves. And the further you go, the stronger the gap“, the expert noted.
