It leaked on Thursday that PvdA and GroenLinks are prepared to go very far to enable a new cabinet. Because VVD and CDA do not feel like forming a government with two left-wing parties, PvdA and GroenLinks would think about close cooperation.
The news hit like a bomb, especially among the supporters of the two political parties. Former formateur and VVD prominent Uri Rosenthal therefore does not believe that the cooperation between the two parties will break the deadlock in the formation: ”The rumor of a cooperation between these parties has been going on for a long time. When I listen to the reports about the commotion in the ranks of these parties, I have yet to see such a collaboration,” Rosenthal says in WNL on Saturday on NPO Radio 1.
Members are furious
Dozens of prominent figures from both the PvdA and GroenLinks have already expressed their displeasure on social media. “Merging for power makes blind to the powerless,” said former PvdA party chairman Hans Spekman. Members of both parties are especially afraid of losing the weight of their voting rights. “The PvdA in particular is afraid that a merger is underway and that will mean the end of the party,” says Rosenthal.
Bad communication
Jaap Stalenburg, PvdA member of parliament in Friesland, is particularly surprised about the poor communication from the ‘engine block’. By this he means D66 and the VVD. “How is it possible that there is so little information about the formation from Kaag and Rutte, so that we roll from one misunderstanding to another every day?” said the States member in WNL on Saturday.
