London. Cole Palmer made up for his missed shots in midweek by scoring a penalty as Chelsea beat Fulham 1-0 on Saturday for the team’s third straight Premier League victory.
Palmer sent Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno the wrong way with his shot in first-half added time after Raheem Sterling was tripped in the area.
It was 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth goal in the league this season and his fifth penalty. The former Manchester City player has emerged as one of the most fruitful players among this summer’s expensive acquisitions.
And it came after Palmer missed several chances on Tuesday in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to second-tier Middlesbrough in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals.
“After the game (against Middlesbrough) I was disappointed, as would be anyone who missed so many chances and it cost the team the victory,” Palmer admitted on the TNT broadcast. “People know that you have those games and I tried to leave them behind.”
Chelsea have won three in a row in the league for the first time under coach Mauricio Pochettino and extended their winning streak at home in the league to four – their best streak at Stamford Bridge in three and a half years. With this victory, the Blues provisionally moved into eighth place over Manchester United and Newcastle.
Another positive for Chelsea was the return of defender Ben Chilwell for the first time since September from injury.
Fulham were coming off a 2-1 home win against Arsenal in the league, but have struggled on the road this season. The visitors had few quality opportunities, but Chelsea needed their goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic to avoid the shot of Mexican Raúl Jiménez, who tried to tie in the 73rd minute.
