San José (AFP) – The British group Coldplay began its first world tour since 2017, “Music of the Spheres”, in Costa Rica on Friday evening in front of a jubilant crowd of 40,000 people at the National Stadium in San José.
A floor that generates energy when spectators jump, bicycles that generate electricity to power the stage and a promise to donate a tree for each ticket sold: the group’s tour is presented as “ecological” and “sustainable” on its official website .
Coldplay explained on social networks that it chose Costa Rica as the first stop on its new tour, because of its image as a “green” country and its electric model, which is 99.98% renewable, according to the Costa Rican Tourism Institute. (ICT).
After Costa Rica, the world tour – which has 57 dates in total – will continue in particular in the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
The British performed their first song, “Higher Power”, at 7:45 p.m. local time (01:45 GMT, Saturday), before performing hits such as “Yellow”, “The Scientist”, “Fix You” and even a traditional Costa Rican song.
Singer and frontman Chris Martin premiered ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ and asked the audience – in Spanish – to put away cell phones so they could ‘enjoy an intimate moment’.
“There are no words to explain it. The lights, the songs, the good vibes they send out. The truth is that it was a great concert from start to finish,” said enthused one of the spectators, Carolina Jiménez, 38 years old.
The group had suspended its tours in 2017, the time to find a way to reduce its carbon footprint.
“We are 50% of the goal we want to achieve” in this area, Chris Martin said in an interview with the BBC last year.
