Last Thursday night, the British band Coldplay performed live to thousands of fans on the waterfront in Long Island City, New York. The performance culminated in a fireworks display that can be seen on the NBC network special for the United States Independence Day celebrations.
At dusk, the acclaimed band took to the stage at Hunters Point South Park, and against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, as part of pre-recording for Macy’s July 4th celebration. Between recorded takes of Viva La Vida and the new single Higher Power, Coldplay played an impromptu series of off-camera hits for fans, including Yellow, Clocks, and A Sky Full Of Stars, as they waited for the sun to set.
More than 1,000 fireworks were launched from a barge and lit up the sky, then reflected off the East River behind the band during Higher Power’s performance.
As for the public, 500 fans received free admission to the event with proof of vaccination, but the crowd increased to more than 8,000 people, who were also looking to witness one of the first open-air concerts in the city. Fans secured their location by gathering in the park more than 4 hours before the show.
“A magical night in Queens, getting ready for Macy’s @NBC 4th of July celebrations. 8,000 beautiful New Yorkers appeared out of nowhere ”, was the phrase chosen by the band led by Chris Martin to express on the networks the great moment that the band had lived.
