“Colder on Ascension Day than New Year’s Day for the First Time in Over a Century”

For the first time in over a century it was colder on Ascension Day than on New Year’s Day. This is mainly because we had an exceptionally warm first day of the year. A temperature of 15.6 degrees was then measured in De Bilt.

Although it was sunny in many places on Thursday, the temperature at the central measurement site did not rise above 15.5 degrees, reports Weer.nl.

For the time of year, Ascension Day was on the chilly side. On average, it was 18.2 degrees on May 18 between 1991 and 2020, according to the weather site.

The last year in which it was colder on Ascension Day than on New Year’s Day was 1921. Then it was 12.4 degrees on the first holiday of the year and on Ascension Day, in that year on May 5, only 12.2 degrees.

King’s Day also passed this year with lower temperatures than New Year’s Day. That had never happened before on King’s Day or Queen’s Day.

The coming days will follow Weer.nl increasingly warmer air entering the Netherlands. On Sunday it can reach 25 degrees in the east of the country for the first time this year.
