Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, which was released in Europe on June 22, 2001 for PC, turned twenty years old. It was one of the early games of the Czech Bohemia Interactive, from which it later grew into the much-appreciated Arma series. The shooter, which has since grown to adulthood, was re-released in 2011 as Arma: Cold War Assault. This newer version is now the Steamin a GOGwill also be distributed for free on the occasion of the birthday.
As its title suggests, Cold War Assault presents a Cold War conflict. During his twenty-mission, storytelling campaign, the player takes part in a tripartite conflict on an island where he can hide in the skin of American, Soviet and “resistant” soldiers. Like the Arma games, this is a pretty realistic shooting game that can be called a simulation rather than a game. The user can control the buck from both inside and outside, and if he is the squad leader, he can also view the landscape from above. About 40 ground and aircraft can be driven on the large, 100-square-kilometer runways. All of this may not sound special today, but the game was a major achievement around the turn of the millennium.
Bohemia Interactive has disrupted a birthday party two-hour live broadcast, during which the developers talked about the Arma series, and a big band performed the music of the militaristic franchise.
Arma: Cold War Assault is only free until tomorrow, so it’s okay to rush to stock it.
