The ongoing roadworks on Athlone’s Mardyke Street are affecting local businesses, with one coffee shop owner warning that they are putting the future of his business at risk. Conor Hamill, owner of Slow Roast Sandwiches & Coffee, has voiced his frustration at the lack of support for businesses in the area during the lengthy street improvements, which are not due to finish until March 2024. While he acknowledges the long-term benefits of the improvements, in the short-term these roadworks are severely impacting trade, with the coffee shop posting a notice on its door stating: “Closed for today – roadworks are killing trade!” Conor has been working hard to maintain trade, but with roads closed and barriers for as far as the eye can see, he is struggling. Requests for large signage to remind the public that local businesses are open for business have so far gone unheeded, with only tiny A3 signs erected. Local councillor Vinny McCormack has asked whether commercial rates might be reduced or waived for businesses on the street, but was told this would not be possible. This lack of support is causing significant concern for Conor, who worries that his Athlone outlet could suffer unless something is done to help businesses survive until the upgrade project is completed.
