Coffee in the test: aroma good, but… | Haller Kreisblatt

Not only does it stand in cups on German coffee or breakfast tables, but also next to screens in offices and home offices, or you see it in cups as an elixir of life to go: people drink more coffee than mineral water or beer – statistically speaking, every consumer sips a total of 164 liters in Germany, preferably filtered.

But what is the quality of filter coffee? Stiftung Warentest ordered 15 different roasted coffees and analyzed their taste and contents. The most important findings from the filter coffee ranking in the “test” issue 11/2024: The price range is huge at 8.60 to 32 euros per kilo, but the differences in the assessment of quality are rather smaller. In terms of pure sensory properties, which the testers include appearance, smell, taste, mouthfeel, intensity, balance and aftertaste, the ratings range from “very good” (1 time) to “good” (7 times) to “satisfactory” (7 times ).

In the overall ranking, however, the test winner only achieved a “good” rating: Eduscho filter coffee No. 1 from Tchibo made from Arabica and Robusta beans (14 euros per kilo) had a very intense smell, very balanced with a strong body, a clear bitter note, medium strength Chocolate note, hardly fruity, slightly sour and with a particularly long-lasting impression. But pollutants, deficiencies in the declaration and in the working conditions and environmental protection on the coffee plantation spoiled the product testers’ enjoyment.

The seven other “good” coffees hardly taste any worse. According to the product testers, they have a good sensory quality and only differ in nuances in taste. But even here, most people cannot score points with a satisfactory commitment to social and environmental issues.

As a price tip, the product testers recommend two products that are characterized by good coffee combined with good commitment and reasonable prices: Barissimo Classic from Aldi Nord (8.60 euros) and the dmBio coffee classic ground (9.90 euros).

Aroma tip: Always buy small quantities and store them in a dark and cool place

Since time and oxygen are bad for the aroma of ground coffee, the product testers advise that it is best to buy filter coffee in a quantity that can be consumed quickly. It would be smart to put the opened package in a tightly sealing container
Store in a dry, dark and cool place – but not in the refrigerator.
