New American study shows that women who consume two to three cups of coffee per day present lower overall and abdominal fat than those who drink less.

A relationship between coffee and body fat
In the Journal of Nutrition, the researchers looked at data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a survey by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So scientists have studied the correlation between the number of cups of coffee drunk daily and the percentage of overall and abdominal body fat.
They demonstrated that women aged 20 to 44 who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had lower abdominal fat levels 3.4% lower than women who didn’t use it. Concerning women aged 45 to 69, it is the subjects who consume more than four cups of coffee who have a level of abdominal fat 4.1% lower.

Coffee is said to contain bioactive compounds
So the average percentage of total body fat was 2.8% lower than in women of all ages who drank two to three cups of coffee.
Lee Smith, researcher at Anglia Ruskin University explains: “Our research suggests that coffee may contain bio active compounds other than caffeine helping to regulate body weight, which could potentially be used to fight overweight and obesity. “
He concludes: “However, it is important to interpret the results of this study in the light of its limitations, as this study was carried out at a specific time, it is impossible to establish trends. However, we do not think that a person’s weight is likely to influence their coffee consumption. “
