Coffee growers are excluded from the federal fertilizer support program

Leaders of different coffee organizations asked the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to include Veracruz in the Fertilizer Program.

According to Cirio Ruiz González, president of the Coatepec Regional Coffee Council, for several years there have been problems in coffee production due to the rust fungus and low prices.

“For the current cycle there have been better prices and it is expected that they will not be low for the next harvest. There is a lot of interest in doing good fertilization and increasing coffee production,” he said.

The foregoing, in his opinion, would result in higher incomes for producers, the creation of more
jobs in the coffee field, as well as well-being for coffee-producing families and also a higher income from foreign currency from exports.

However, the necessary fertilization for the increase in production has a limitation in the excessive increase in the cost of the fertilizer, which in the majority is
100 percent compared to prices of the previous cycle.

“We are aware of the announcement of the expansion of the fertilizer program
to more states and about an emerging fertilizer production program
organic”, added Ruiz González.

In that sense, he referred that it is necessary to support producers
and associations that make the organic fertilizer that they apply to their coffee plantations.

“It is very convenient to consider a Fertilization Program subsidizing small producers of up to five hectares, a subsidy of at least 60 percent of the price of the fertilizer,” emphasized the President of the Coatepec Regional Coffee Council.
