Positive news does not run the streets in these times of crisis, both in terms of investment and employment. Therefore, Nespresso’s announcement regarding the 160 million investment for its Romont site (FR) is very timely. This sum is intended for the extension of its production center in order, explains the company, “to meet the growing consumer demand for its coffees” and “to support its international development in the years to come”.
The start of construction is scheduled for June 2021 and the new production lines should be fully operational by June 2022. The number of ten will be dedicated to coffees in the Vertuo and Professional ranges.
“This is the kind of announcement that does good in this time of crisis”
Olivier Curty, Friborg Councilor of State
This expansion will be accompanied by the creation of 300 direct jobs over the next ten years, to which should be added related jobs and the development of local and regional businesses. “This is the kind of announcement that does good in this period of crisis,” said Olivier Curty, the Friborg State Councilor responsible for the Economy and Employment. Nespresso thus confirms that large international groups can produce competitively in our canton. It is also an investment that consolidates our region’s strike force in the bioeconomy, and I am delighted. ”
Inaugurated in 2015, the Romont factory produces Vertuo coffees, currently sold in 21 countries in Europe, North America and Asia.
Over 1,000 jobs in Switzerland
The 300 new jobs will be added to the 368 current positions at the Romont site. Nespresso employs a total of more than 1,000 people in Switzerland, including 334 in Orbe (VD) and 550 in Avenches (VD), not to mention the headquarters in Lausanne. In recent years, four new production lines had already added to the site’s capacity, which resulted in the creation of 50 additional jobs, in parallel with the inauguration of a new Product Development Center and a Coffee Campus in 2018, said the company in a press release.
“Despite the difficult period that we are all experiencing, this long-term strategic investment confirms Nespresso’s continued success and its leadership in the portioned coffee segment of which we have been pioneers since 1986,” said CEO Guillaume Le Cunff. It also demonstrates our continued commitment to our Swiss roots and the long-term economic development of the region and the country. ”
