Cofepris closes 97 clandestine clinics

Mexico City. The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) reported that it closed 97 health service establishments that presented serious irregularities or operated clandestinely.

“Since 2022, Cofepris has strengthened actions to reduce and mitigate health risks generated by hospital medical care establishments that fail to comply with both the Mexican Official Standard (NOM) 016 that establishes minimum characteristics of hospital infrastructure and equipment and
specialized health care offices.”

That year, the health authority closed 34 establishments; in 2023, 49, while in the first half of 2024, 14 medical care units received this administrative sanction.
In compliance with the principles of combating corruption and transparency, Cofepris began publishing the list of closed establishments with the aim of making the population aware of those places that represent a risk to health, prior to acquiring their services.

“This program is the spearhead for strengthening health surveillance in the national territory. Its purpose is to eradicate clinics with critical irregularities or clandestine operations, through supervision and closure; it is worth remembering that in the past they were only suspended, giving rise to discretionary acts.”

The agency said it continues to strengthen surveillance to ensure that establishments offering health services comply with legislation, with the aim of minimizing potential risks.
