Cody Gakpo’s Performance Leads Liverpool to 0-2 Victory over Burnley

Dec 26, 2023 at 8:25 PM Update: 22 minutes ago

Cody Gakpo played an important role in Liverpool’s 0-2 victory over Burnley on Tuesday. The attacker provided the assist for the first goal of the new Premier League leader.

Already in the sixth minute, Gakpo was able to cheer with his teammates at Burnley, number nineteen in the Premier League. The former PSV player made a nice move and then brought Darwin Núñez into position. It hit with control.

In the first minutes after the 0-1, Gakpo remained very active. After two missed chances, he looked to score in the 28th minute, but his goal was disallowed after a foul by Núñez. Moments later, Mohamed Salah’s attempt ended up on the crossbar after a pass from Gakpo.

Liverpool failed to increase the score before half-time and ‘The Reds’ were unable to make the difference for a long time in the second half. It was only in the ninetieth minute that substitute Diogo Jota ended the match with the 0-2 score.

Gravenberch’s assist is cancelled

It was exciting at Turf Moor due to the minimal difference until Jota’s liberating goal, although Virgil van Dijk and his teammates hardly encountered any problems. Gravenberch and Gakpo watched the final phase from the bench.

The pair were substituted after 67 minutes. Gravenberch had recently thought he could add an assist. He laid the ball perfectly for Harvey Elliott shortly after half-time. His goal was disallowed after a VAR check due to Salah’s offside.

Thanks to the victory with Liverpool, Van Dijk, Gakpo and Gravenberch take over the top position in the Premier League from Arsenal, which still has a game in hand. ‘The Reds’ have a two-point lead.

For Liverpool, the 2023 football year is over after the win at Burnley. Manager Jürgen Klopp’s team will be back in action against Newcastle United on January 1. Arsenal will play against West Ham United (Thursday) and Fulham (Saturday) this calendar year.
