Code Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Extreme Cold in East of the Netherlands, Perceived Temperature to Reach -15 Degrees

The KNMI will issue code yellow for tomorrow morning in Overijssel and Gelderland due to the low perceived temperature. Due to moderate frost and cold winds, temperatures in the east of the country drop to -15 degrees.

Such a low perceived temperature occurs on average three days a year. The KNMI points out that at such a temperature there is a greater risk of hypothermia and cold injuries. In the provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland, the yellow code applies tomorrow morning between 6:00 am and 11:00 am. Then the mercury slowly rises again, writes RTV East.

East wind

It is expected to freeze around seven degrees below zero in the east of the country tonight. The fact that the perceived temperature is a bit lower is due to the icy easterly wind that will blow there tomorrow.

The perceived temperature is calculated from a combination of the temperature and the wind. The harder the wind blows and the colder it is, the lower the temperature will feel. The sun does not play a role in the calculation method: in sunny weather the perceived temperature may therefore be higher than the calculated perceived temperature suggests.

Record

The low feeling temperature tomorrow morning is not a record: in February 2012 a feeling temperature of -28.6 degrees was reported in Lelystad.

The lowest temperature ever measured in the Netherlands is -27.4 degrees. That was in 1942 in Winterswijk.

Extra cold in Ede

Since yesterday afternoon, a large number of households in Ede, Gelderland, have been left out in the cold due to a disruption in the heating network. Initially it concerned 2,000 households, but some of them are now receiving heat again.

Heat company Ede expects that the problems will not be solved before tomorrow morning and is working all night to provide all homes with heat again.
