The KNMI issued code yellow for the entire country on Thursday morning due to local slippery conditions and dense fog. The weather warning applies until 10 a.m.
According to the KNMI, it can become slippery due to freezing of wet road sections, especially in coastal areas where it snows.
It is foggy in many places in the Netherlands this morning. Locally there is dense fog with less than 200 meters of visibility, reports Weerplaza. This can be a nuisance to traffic. The fog dissipates during the day.
There is (dense) fog in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, North Brabant and Zeeland. In some places visibility is less than 200 meters. Dense fog may also form in other places in the coming hours.
Rijkswaterstaat has spread nationally for the first time. All highways were coated with a layer of salt during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, because slippery conditions were expected.
According to a spokesperson, the brine trucks have driven a total of 35,000 kilometers and 2.2 million kilos of salt have been spread. That amounts to “one teaspoon per square meter,” she says.
This means code yellow
The KNMI issues four different weather codes: green, yellow, orange and red. The weather institute describes code yellow as follows: “There may be a risk of dangerous weather. These are weather situations that often occur in the Netherlands for which it is advisable to pay attention, especially when on the road. Code yellow can be issued 48 hours before the weather phenomenon occurs. The certainty is at least 60 percent.”
