Code yellow due to sleet and extreme cold: wind chill in Groningen drops to -16 degrees on Saturday night

The KNMI has announced code yellow for the night from Saturday to Sunday due to extreme cold.

In Groningen and Friesland the perceived temperature can drop to -16 degrees. “There is therefore a risk of hypothermia and cold injuries,” the KNMI reports. The warning applies to both provinces from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.

In Eelde the mercury can drop to 10 degrees below zero, but the icy wind makes it feel much colder.

Also code yellow due to risk of ice

Earlier in the day, the KNMI had already announced code yellow because of the risk of freezing rain. This warning applies to Boxing Day in the middle and north of our country.

Halfway through Sunday morning, slippery conditions can arise just above the major rivers due to sleet. The sleet is slowly moving to the north and only reaches the north and northeast in the evening, according to the KNMI. It can remain slippery there until Monday morning.

‘Adjust your driving behaviour’

The KNMI advises people to adjust their driving behavior and to follow the weather and traffic reports carefully.

The following tips apply to driving on slippery roads
– Moderate your speed
– Keep enough distance from the traffic in front of you
– Look as far ahead as possible, so that you can respond in time
