The city council is calling on people to stop coming. If that still happens, mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake will close the shops in the city center.
It was also very busy in Maastricht on Saturday, according to the spokeswoman. The city then issued a code orange, just like Sunday morning. This means that one-way traffic applies in busy shopping streets and that the city council uses all available enforcers and so-called hospitality guides.
According to the spokeswoman, there are many Belgians in the city. “Many people come to the city center to visit specific stores,” she said.
According to a spokesperson, it is also getting busier in Eindhoven on Sunday afternoon. The southern Dutch city is calling on people to stop coming to the city center. On Saturday afternoon, Mayor John Jorritsma decided to close the shops earlier, because it was much too busy, partly due to Belgians. His colleague in Dordrecht did the same on Saturday.
