Code Red Heat Wave Alert in Italy: Stay Safe and Cool in the Extreme Heat

Jul 19, 2023 at 11:28 Update: 19 minutes ago

Italians must continue to take care of their health because of the heat wave. After the exceptional heat on Tuesday, code red applies in even more places on Wednesday.

The highest warning level now also applies to Bari and Catania in the south of the country, Civitavecchia in the center and Turin in the northwest. Only in Bolzano, in South Tyrol, has code red been replaced by yellow.

Italy, like other Southern European countries, is experiencing a heat wave. In almost the entire country, people have to take this into account for their health. In all cities, with the exception of Genoa and Bolzano, people with weaker health, the elderly and small children in particular can get into trouble.

In 23 of the 27 cities that the Italian Ministry of Health advises on, the weather is so extreme that everyone has to watch out.

‘Extremely high temperatures’ in southern Italy

Stay out of the sun during the hottest hours, take it easy, ventilate and keep as cool as possible, the ministry says. The government also recommends eating light food, such as pasta and fish, and avoiding spicy food.

The heat even affects electronic devices, the news agency searched ANSA out. The devices will not explode at the current temperatures in Italy, says an expert from the Technical University of Milan. However, the battery wears out faster.

Weeronline speaks of “extremely high temperatures” of 35 to 40 degrees in southern Italy. Locally, as in Sardinia and Sicily, it can even reach 43 or 44 degrees. It will cool down a bit from Thursday, although temperatures of up to 40 degrees are still possible. The same applies to Spain and Greece.
