Code Orange Issued for Coastal Areas as Storm Ciarán Brings Heavy Wind Gusts

Nov 2, 2023 at 6:12 AM Update: 15 minutes ago

The KNMI will issue a code orange for the coastal areas after 11 a.m. on Thursday. The weather institute warns of very heavy gusts of wind due to storm Ciarán in the provinces of Zeeland, North and South Holland and the Wadden area.

Code yellow is in force in the rest of the Netherlands, except for the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel, where there is no weather warning.

At the end of the morning, very heavy wind gusts of 100 to 110 kilometers per hour are expected in Zeeland, coming from a southerly direction.

They are expanding northwards towards South and North Holland and the west of the Wadden area. Tonight the wind will gradually decrease and code yellow still applies due to wind gusts of between 80 and 100 kilometers per hour.

This can cause damage and danger from trees and flying objects, according to the KNMI.

Various safety regions in the coastal areas warn X also in advance for damage and ask to call emergency number 112 only in acute cases. This concerns, for example, the risk of collapse. For example, if there is a fallen tree on the roadside, the municipality may be called. If a tree is in danger of falling on a public road, or if roof covering has become loose, the fire brigade may be called on site.

In the rest of the country, except for Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel, code yellow applies due to heavy wind gusts of 75 to 90 kilometers per hour. During the evening the wind decreases and the heavy gusts gradually disappear. In the northwest coastal area they will continue until Friday morning. Traffic and outdoor activities may be affected by this.
