Coconut Water, Not a Covid Drug but Rich in Benefits

Coconut water is a food rich in B vitamins.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Young coconut water has recently been sought after by the public because it is considered to be able to cure Covid-19 positive patients. Although it has been denied by various medical experts, this water turns out to have other health benefits.

Clinical nutrition specialist, dr. Juwalita Surapsari, M.Gizi, Sp.GK, said that the nutritional content of coconut water maybe it can boost immunity. But until now there has been no scientific evidence that coconut water is able to function as medicine, let alone Covid-19 medicine.

This doctor who graduated from the clinical nutrition specialist education program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia explained about the nutritional content contained in coconut water. In macronutrients, then most of the form is carbohydrates.

Coconut is 94 percent water, 5 percent carbohydrates in the form of glucose and fructose, 0.02 percent protein and very little fat. In terms of micronutrients, the most prominent content in coconut water is Vitamin B, namely B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, and B9.

“We know that B9 is known as Folate. It turns out that B vitamins, especially B6 and Folate, have a very important role in the overall immune system,” said dr. Juwalita, in his official statement on Monday (112/7).

He said vitamin B6 has many benefits for the immune system. Most likely, people who consume coconut water benefit from the vitamin content in it, so consuming coconut water can help meet the needs of B vitamins.

Vitamin B itself is involved in all enzymatic processes in the body so that many chemical reactions in the body are supported by B vitamins. In addition, dr. Juwalita said coconut water also has high levels of electrolytes, because it contains potassium and magnesium.

These two elements are very good for controlling blood pressure and heart health. This means helping prevent the emergence of comorbidities when someone is exposed to Covid-19. “It is also possible that the consumption of coconut water can give positive suggestions to people who consume it. Anything that is positive suggestion to our body can have a good impact as well,” said dr. juwalita.

“So the key to getting a healthy body condition, both when you are exposed to certain diseases or just maintaining health, in addition to maintaining physical, must also maintain a balance of mind,” he continued. According to dr. Juwalita, the new habit of consuming coconut water is a positive thing. There are so many benefits of nature that can actually be used for health. But keep in mind that no one type of food is superior to another.

That is, when consuming food and drinks, you must know the purpose or want to fulfill which nutrition. If you want to meet the needs of B vitamins, coconut water can be an alternative. The thing to remember is to keep a variety of foods with the principle of balanced nutrition so that the needs of macronutrients and micronutrients can be achieved.

Regarding the health benefits of coconut water, a study conducted by Manisha DebMandal of KPC Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata India and Shyamapada Mandal of Department of Zoology, Gurudas College Kolkata India found that coconut water indeed accelerates the absorption of drugs and makes it easier for the drug to reach peak concentrations in blood due to its electrolyte effect. In the article “Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.: Arecaceae): In health promotion and disease prevention” published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine, it is stated that coconut water contains a free amino acid, L-arginine, which can reduce free radicals, and contains vitamin C which reduces lipid peroxidation. In addition, coconut water has a cardioprotective effect on myocardial infarction because it is rich in mineral ions, especially potassium.

In addition to carbohydrates and protein, coconut water also contains micro elements in the form of minerals that the body needs including Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Phosphorus and Sulfur. This rich mineral content makes coconut water often used as an ingredient in traditional medicine for generations.

If examined again, in coconut water also contains various vitamins. Call it vitamins B, C, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid, folic acid, biotin, riboflavin, and so on. So it’s not wrong to say coconut water contains macro and micro elements that are quite complete.
